This event brought together heads of missions from 14 African countries in Canada, representatives of missions from nine other African countries, Association members, as well as other Members of Parliament and Senators.

Other members of this delegation included senators Pierre Cuypers, Marie-Pierre De la Gontrie and Catherine Morin-Desailly, and National Assembly Members Philippe Gosselin and Danièle Obono.

The Honourable Dan Hays, Speaker of the Senate of Canada, and a parliamentary delegation travelled to Japan from May 19 to 24, 2005. This visit was at the invitation of Chikage Oogi, President of the House of Councillors of Japan.

The XVIth Canada-Mexico Interparliamentary Meeting was held in Canada from November 13 to 16, 2009, consecutively in Saint John, New Brunswick, on November 13 and 14, then in Ottawa, on November 15 and 16.

The South Africans expressed interest in the idea. To conclude, the two Speakers outlined the processes used to elect and appoint speakers in the Canadian and South African parliaments, and Speaker Milliken and the Clerk explained the organizational structure of the House of Commons and the role of the Senate.

In the Senate, there are only seven visible minority Senators, representing about 6.6% of the Chamber. Furthermore, during the 2006 federal election, the major political parties ran 108 visible minority candidates, or about 8% of the total number of candidates.

Speaker Annisette-George provided updates on ParlAmericas’ recent and upcoming activities, and welcomed two new Board members: Claudel Francis, Speaker of St. Lucia’s Senate; and Veronica Camino Farjat, a member of Mexico’s Senate and President of ParlAmericas’ Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality (PNGE).

On the matter of French taxes, the member from Switzerland had informed him that a bill was currently before the French Senate on exonerating staff of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) from paying taxes to the French authorities.
