The committee also studied another draft report entitled The Impact of the COVID-19 Crisis on the Civil Dimension of Security. Senator Cordy attended this meeting, where members talked about studying a draft report for advancing the “Women, Peace and Security” agenda.

Three broad themes were listed on the meeting agenda: the impact of the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, trade, and the UK’s renewed approach to foreign policy. Discussion was frank and informative, and both delegations agreed that the future held many opportunities for deepening the relationship between the two countries.

Participants also highlighted the aggravating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on gender inequalities as well as the increased risk faced by women who are disproportionately represented in vulnerable and high-risk occupations and unpaid work.

During their inaugural meeting, Speaker Kinsella and President Sobotka discussed the impact of the current global financial crisis on each country’s economies and the efforts by governments to mitigate this impact with fiscal stimulus.

In their presentations, the High Commissioners covered topics including trade, foreign policy, cybersecurity and climate change, among others. To further enrich the dialogue, participants then heard from parliamentarians from both countries on each of the three agenda items.
