High Commissioner Charrette provided RUUK members with a detailed overview of current issues of importance to the United Kingdom (U.K.) including Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic and the relationships between Westminster and the devolved administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The meeting was moderated by OSCE PA High-Level Expert Lamberto Zannier and included opening remarks by OSCE PA President Margareta Cederfelt. A keynote speech was delivered by Mr. Marco Pedrazzi, Professor of International Law, University of Milan.

Mr. Spengemann acknowledged that, while Canada has a high global ranking regarding UHC, the system is not perfect. Among the challenges Canada faces as it strives to implement UHC more broadly is the country’s vast geography and the related difficulty of accessing remote communities.

This session examined the importance of members maintaining high ethical standards; committing to transparency and integrity; and adhering to rules of conduct. In her presentation, Ms. Shanahan discussed the importance of codes of conduct for Parliamentarians and how they can contribute to building and maintaining public trust.

The event was jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. On the first day, Mr. Spengemann moderated a session on responses to the pandemic and respect for human rights.

The Honourable Peter Milliken, Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, and a parliamentary delegation travelled to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan from January 10 to 12, 2005. This official visit was the result of an invitation from Mr. Chaudhry Amir Hussain, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
