The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association held the second of its CPA High-Level Roundtables with Commonwealth High Commissioners based in London and representatives of Overseas Territories.

1 Pursuant to the decision of the 28th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) held in Malaysia on 18-24 August 2007, and in accordance with the Statutes of AIPA, the 29th General Assembly was held in Singapore on 18-24 August 2008.

The delegation of the Canadian Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association which attended the 57th Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in London, United Kingdom from July 21 – 28, 2011 has the honour to present its Report.

Mr. Spengemann acknowledged that, while Canada has a high global ranking regarding UHC, the system is not perfect. Among the challenges Canada faces as it strives to implement UHC more broadly is the country’s vast geography and the related difficulty of accessing remote communities.

The IPU supports the efforts of the United Nations, whose objectives it shares, and works in close cooperation with it. The IPU also cooperates with regional inter-parliamentary organizations, as well as with international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations which are motivated by the same ideals.

While energy dependent states have attempted to diversify their supplies by developing links with Central Asia, the impact of these policies has been largely undermined by the monopolistic contractual relations of Russia with Central Asian countries.

The interaction with state legislators enables members of the Canadian Section of the IPG to achieve better the aim of finding points of convergence in respective national policies, initiating dialogue on points of divergence, encouraging exchanges of information and promoting better understanding on shared issues of concern. Discussions focused on the high proportion of women in the Ethiopian Parliament, foreign investment in Ethiopia, including that of Canada, sectors open to foreign investment, such as the banking sector, which recently opened to such investment, and the ease of doing business in Ethiopia.

The Chair welcomed Members to the meeting and extended a particular welcome to Mr Daniel Reisiegel (Czech Republic) who was attending the Steering Committee for the first time as part of the rotating membership system between Slovenia, Poland and the Czech Republic. Mr Reisiegel’s colleague Ms Hana Sediva was also welcomed as an observer.
