The Honourable Bob Nault, P.C., M.P., President of ParlAmericas International and Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, lead Canadian parliamentarians in a meeting with Ms. Isabel Plá, Chile’s Minister of Women and Gender Equality, who is responsible for addressing all forms of gender discrimination in Chile.

The 13th Gathering of the PNGE explored the ways in which strengthening social supports and services can contribute to addressing the root causes of gender inequality and other forms of social vulnerability, building on conversations spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic on enhancing social protection systems.

The WGA uses six basic strategies: develop and communicate regional policy; serve as a leadership forum; build regional capacity; conduct research and disseminate findings; form coalitions and partnerships in order to advance regional interests; and build public understanding and support for regional issues and policy positions.

At the Annual Session, the Assembly adopts a final declaration and resolutions at its plenary session. It elects the 11 parliamentarians who form the Bureau of the Assembly (the President, nine Vice-Presidents and the Treasurer), as well as the Chair, Vice-Chair and Rapporteur of each of the three General Committees.

The Statutes and Rules of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) permits members to form geopolitical groups. These groups play an important role in the functioning and activities of the IPU. Canada belongs to the Twelve Plus Group and Canadian parliamentarians occasionally participate in meetings of its Steering Committee of representatives from approximately seven to nine member-countries.
