The Parliamentary Conference on the Global Economic Crisis was organized on the initiative of the Inter-Parliamentary Union to educate parliamentarians on the current economic upheaval and to give them the opportunity to meet with highly qualified experts and benefit from their knowledge. Hosted by the Anguilla Branch of the CPA, the conference had delegates considering its theme “The Role of the Legislature in Controlling and/or Contributing to over-development.” The conference was honoured to receive many distinguished guests, such as the Hon. Robert Hughes, senior member of the opposition in Anguilla.

The Chair welcomed Members to the meeting and extended a particular welcome to Ms Asta Möller (Iceland) who was attending the Steering Committee for the first time as the 12+ Group’s representative on the IPU Executive Committee. He noted that it was the International Day of Democracy and that a number of events were planned in 12+ Group national parliaments to mark the occasion.

Senator Consiglio Di Nino, Head of the Canadian Delegation to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), participated in the Fifth Economic Conference of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly held in Andorra la Vella, Andorra, May 24-26, 2007.
