The visit was an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations between the Parliaments of Switzerland and Canada and to discuss numerous topics, including free-trade, the current challenges posed by the refugee crisis in Europe, immigration policies and Brexit.

The ERC, which meets annually, is a regional association of state and provincial legislators from 19 member jurisdictions from the United States and Canada (see Appendix). By facilitating cooperation among its member jurisdictions, the ERC promotes multi-state and/or region-wide solutions to the problems and challenges facing state and provincial legislators. A principal means by which the aims of the IPG are achieved is the annual meeting, which alternates between Canada and the United States and is attended by delegates from the Canadian Parliament and the U.S. Congress.
