Today, Sark retains this independence but through a fully elected parliament (called the Chief Pleas); neither part of the United Kingdom nor European Union, yet not a sovereign state either. I thank the Executive of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Canadian Branch, for selecting me for this event.

Mr. Ted Opitz led a Canadian delegation of two, including Mr. Dennis Bevington, to the meeting of the Standing Committee of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region (the Standing Committee) held in Stockholm, Sweden, 14 February 2012. Accompanying the delegation was Mr. Tim Williams from the Parliamentary Information and Research Service of the Library of Parliament as advisor to the delegation.

This is particularly important in the next stage of the Canada-Europe Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) which will require ratification by all member states of the EU and approval of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU.

In addition to its meetings with parliamentarians, government officials, and representatives of think tanks and business associations, on 18 November 2014, the delegation had the honour of participating in ceremonies surrounding Latvia’s National Day, laying a wreath on behalf of the Parliament of Canada at the Monument of Freedom, attending ...
