Ms. Yon-Courtin and other D-CA members congratulated Mr. Sorbara on his election as CAEU President and invited him to introduce himself and outline CAEU’s plans for 2022–2023. D-CA members reiterated their plans to travel to Canada in September 2022 for the annual interparliamentary meeting (IPM).

The French delegation was led by National Assembly Member Christopher Weissberg, Chair of the French Branch of the Association, and Senator Yan Chantrel, Chair of the France–Canada Friendship Group in the Senate.

The Honourable Marilou McPhedran, Senator, participated in discussions during the session on the legislative process. Her remarks focussed on the Senate of Canada’s role within the Parliament of Canada’s legislative process and touched on various themes including oversight, Senate Public Bills and committee work.

The Honourable Salma Ataullahjan, Senator, Vice-president of the Canadian Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIPU) and President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Committee on Middle East Questions (MEQ), called an extraordinary meeting of this committee to discuss recent developments in Palestine and in Libya.

The Executive Committee members then joined the meeting to take part in a briefing given by Ms. Josiane Simon, Minister-Counsellor (Economic and Commercial Affairs) at the Canadian Embassy in France. Speaker Annisette-George provided updates on ParlAmericas’ recent and upcoming activities, and welcomed two new Board members: Claudel Francis, Speaker of St. Lucia’s Senate; and Veronica Camino Farjat, a member of Mexico’s Senate and President of ParlAmericas’ Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality (PNGE).

The Speaker of the Australian Senate welcomed the Canadian delegation to Australia. He noted the importance of relations between the two Parliaments, particularly in multilateral forums such as the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
