The theme of the Regional Assembly of the Americas was the role of French at school, at work and in politics. Three panels were held around this theme. The work led to the adoption of three declarations: • declaration to promote the French and Creole languages; • declaration of solidarity with the Africa Region; and • declaration of commitment by the Americas Region.

High Commissioner Charrette provided RUUK members with a detailed overview of current issues of importance to the United Kingdom (U.K.) including Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic and the relationships between Westminster and the devolved administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

She further noted some of the positive impacts of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) on trade between the two countries and provided an overview of French investment in Canada and Canadian investment in France.

Three broad themes were listed on the meeting agenda: the impact of the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, trade, and the UK’s renewed approach to foreign policy. Discussion was frank and informative, and both delegations agreed that the future held many opportunities for deepening the relationship between the two countries.
