The workshop drew over 90 participants, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Michelle Bachelet. Accordingly, Canadian delegates had the opportunity to hear about the measures being taken elsewhere in the world to protect human rights during this unprecedented crisis.

First, they welcomed the Chargé d’affaires and a Minister representing the Kenya High Commission in Canada, who discussed current affairs in Kenya and answered questions from parliamentarians.

The High Commissioner and RUUK members spoke about a wide-range of issues of national and international importance to both countries.

This session examined the importance of members maintaining high ethical standards; committing to transparency and integrity; and adhering to rules of conduct. In her presentation, Ms. Shanahan discussed the importance of codes of conduct for Parliamentarians and how they can contribute to building and maintaining public trust.

Although the participation of Members from Benin was not as high as expected, they did show a great deal of interest. Their participation made the seminar pleasant and worthwhile for both delegations. The intensity, variety and relevance of the questions asked by the Members from Benin clearly showed their interest in the seminar.
