Report of the Canadian Parliamentary Delegation respecting its participation at the meeting of the Political Committee of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF) Canadian Branch of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF) Liège, Belgium May 1-5, 2011

The theme for the Annual Session was “Strengthening Regional Security by Fostering Democratic and Inclusive Societies: The Role of the OSCE PA”. The Annual Session, hosted by the Parliament of Canada, was attended by over 300 Parliamentarians. Speaker Gagné and Mr. d’Entremont served as co-hosts.

The Canadian delegation was led by Member of Parliament Marie-France Lalonde, Chair of the Canadian branch of the Association, and consisted of Senator René Cormier, Association’s Vice-Chair, as well as Members of Parliament Lena Metlege Diab, Fayçal El-Khoury, Laila Goodridge, Denis Trudel and Dominique Vien.

The visit to Algeria —the first high-level visit from a Speaker of the Canadian Parliament in a number of years— served to strengthen relations and explore opportunities for further cooperation between our countries and institutions.

This had resulted in the IPU Assembly being placed in the hands of the Speaker of the host Parliament. A copy of the correspondence between the Chair and President Casini on this matter had been circulated, expressing the concerns of the 12+ group.

Mr Krister Örnfjäder (Sweden) said that the Swedish Parliament wondered mostly about the status of the current IPU members who would refuse to ratify the treaty, if there was ever one.
