Wednesday, May 27, 1998

The Special Joint Committee on Child Custody and Access met at 9:52 o’clock a.m., this day, in the Island Room, Prince Edward Hotel, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, the Joint Chairs, the Honourable Landon Pearson and Roger Gallaway presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

From the Senate: The Honourable Senators Anne Cools and Landon Pearson.

From the House of Commons: Carolyn Bennett, Sheila Finsetone, Roger Gallaway and Eric Lowther.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas, Research Coordinator.

Witnesses: As Individuals: Lillian Mead; Janet MacLeod and Sara Underwood. From the P.E.I. Provincial Child Sexual Abuse Advisory Committee: Elaine Rabinowitz, Member and Rona Brown, Co-Chair. From the Community Legal Information Association of Prince Edward Island: Ann Sherman, Executive Director. As Individual: Kathleen Loo Craig, Barrister & Solicitor. From Macnutt and Dumont: Daphne Dumont. From Transition House Association: Joanne Ings, Executive Director. From the P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women: Sharon O'Brien, Chair and Mary Nicholson, Member. From Mediation P.E.I.: Frank Bulger, President and Diane Griffen. From People Concepts: Judy McCann-Beranger. As Individuals: David Dodds; Brian MacKay; Mr. & Mrs. Justin C. MacLellan; Bob Albert.

Pursuant to its Orders of Reference from the Senate dated October 28, 1997 and from the House of Commons dated November 18, 1997 the Committee resumed its study relating to child custody and access.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 4:02 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
