Wednesday, May 20, 1998

The Special Joint Committee on Child Custody and Access met at 9:33 o’clock a.m., this day, in Ballroom C, Coast Terrace Inn, Edmonton, Alberta, the Joint Chairs, the Honourable Landon Pearson and Roger Gallaway presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

From the Senate: The Honourable Senators Thelma Chalifoux, Anne Cools and Landon Pearson.

From the House of Commons: Eleni Bakopanos, Carolyn Bennett, Roger Gallaway and Eric Lowther.

Other Senator present: The Honourable Senator Jean Forest.

Other Member present: Deborah Grey.

In attendance: Ron Stewart, Research Advisor.

Witnesses: From Milner Fenerty: Gerald Chipeur, lawyer. From the Métis Regional Council-Zone 4 of the Métis Nation of Alberta: Brian Fayant, President. As Individual: Dr. Christopher Brooks; Abdulahi Mahamad; Alex Mahé; Russell and Elsie Cable; Terence Rowley; James Haiden; Dan Mason; Maureen Morrison. From Mediation and Family Court Services: Mary Jane Klein, Mediator. As Individual: Dr. Brian Hindmarch, Psychologist; Professor Ferrel Christensen. From the Canadian Male Survivors of Child Abuse Resource Centre: Guy l'Heureux, Founder. From the Children's and Parents Equality Society: George Moss, Founder. From Men's Equal Access Society: Michael McGill, Member. As Individual: Ron Evans; Matt Taylor; Lynne Jenkinson; Denis Paquette.

Pursuant to its Orders of Reference from the Senate dated October 28, 1997 and from the House of Commons dated November 18, 1997 the Committee resumed its study relating to child custody and access.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 12:27 o'clock p.m. the sitting was suspended.

At 1:27 o'clock p.m. the sitting resumed.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 3:45 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
