Thursday, April 2, 1998

The Special Joint Committee on Child Custody and Access met at 10:00 o’clock a.m., this day, in the Cartier Room, Radisson Hotel, Montreal, the Joint Chairs, the Honourable Landon Pearson and Roger Gallaway presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

From the Senate: The Honourable Senators Anne Cools, Mabel DeWare, Duncan Jessiman, Landon Pearson and Lucie Pépin.

From the House of Commons: Carolyn Bennett, Paul Forseth, Roger Gallaway, Peter Mancini and Caroline St-Hiliare.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas, Research Coordinator.

Witnesses: From "Groupes d’action des pères pour le maintien des liens familiaux": Norman Levasseur, President. From "Pères Séparés Inc." Sylvain Camus. From "Association Lien Pères Enfants de Québec": Rock Turcotte; Gilbert Claes and Laurent Prévost. As individuals: Annie Brazeau and Pierre Chapdelaine. From "Fédération des Associations de Familles Monoparentales et Recomposées du Québec": Claudette Maingué, Development Agent and Sylvie Levesque, Director General. From " Regroupement des Familles Monoparentales et Recomposées de Laval": Agathe Maheu. From Grandparents Requesting Access and Dignity (GRAND)(Montreal): Mathilde Erlich-Goldberg, President; Albert Goldberg, Vice-President and Mr. Gerard, Lawyer. Pursuant to its Orders of Reference from the Senate dated October 28, 1997 and from the House of Commons dated November 18, 1997 the Committee resumed its study relating to child custody and access.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 4:13 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned.
