On January 20, the Honourable Michael MacDonald, Senator, and the Honourable John McKay, P.C., M.P. Co-Chairs the Canada-United States Inter-Parliamentary Group (the Group), attended the inauguration of President Donald Trump in Washington D.C.

DELEGATION OBJECTIVES FOR THE EVENT

The Group aims to find points of convergence in respective national policies, to initiate dialogue on points of divergence, to encourage the exchange of information and to promote better understanding among legislators on shared issues of concern. At these events, Canadian delegates engage in conversations that help to achieve these objectives, and that further a better understanding of the nature and scope of the bilateral relationship.

THE EVENT AND DELEGATION OBJECTIVES

The delegation was able to attend the inauguration of President Donald Trump through efforts of Senator Amy Klobuchar; Chair of the Inaugural Committee. Due to freezing temperatures, the inauguration was held inside the United States Capitol Rotunda, and seating was limited to U.S. Senators, Representatives and their guests.

As the delegation could not attend in person, they participated in the Canadian Embassy viewing event hosted by Canadian Ambassador Kirsten Hillman. Over one thousand people - including members of Congress, Canadian parliamentarians, and others - attended the Embassy to commemorate this event. Members of the delegation appreciated experiencing the Presidential Inauguration and the opportunity to engage in further dialogue with their counterparts related to the Canada-U.S. relationship.
