Meanwhile, the following executive summary is available.<br/><br/>On 17 November 2020, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry introduced Bill C-11, An Act to enact the Consumer Privacy Protection Act and the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act and to make consequential and related amendments to other Acts (Digital Charter Implementation Act, 2020), in the House of Commons and it was given first reading. <br/><br/>Part 1 enacts the Consumer Privacy Protection Act to protect the personal information of individuals while recognizing the need of organizations to collect, use or disclose personal information in the course of commercial activities. In consequence, it repeals Part 1 of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act and changes the short title of that Act to the Electronic Documents Act. It also makes consequential and related amendments to other Acts.<br/><br/>Part 2 enacts the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act, which establishes an administrative tribunal to hear appeals of certain decisions made by the Privacy Commissioner under the Consumer Privacy Protection Act and to impose penalties for the contravention of certain provisions of that Act. En conséquence, elle abroge la partie 1 de la Loi sur la protection des renseignements personnels et les documents électroniques et remplace le titre abrégé de cette loi par le titre Loi sur les documents électroniques. Elle apporte aussi des modifications corrélatives et connexes à d’autres lois.<br/><br/>La partie 2 édicte la Loi sur le Tribunal de la protection des renseignements personnels et des données qui constitue un tribunal administratif pour entendre les appels interjetés à l’encontre de certaines décisions rendues par le Commissaire à la protection de la vie privée au titre de la Loi sur la protection de la vie privée des consommateurs et pour infliger des pénalités relatives à la contravention de certaines dispositions de cette dernière loi.
