Visit to Canada of the Right Honourable Martin Schulz,
President of the European Parliament

On May 18, the Right Honourable Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, visited Ottawa at the invitation of the Honourable Georges J. Furey, Q.C., Speaker of the Senate and the Honourable Geoff Regan, P.C., M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons. He was accompanied by Mr. Markus Winkler, Head of Cabinet, Mr. Armin Machmer, Deputy Head of Cabinet and Spokesman, Mr. Walter Masur, Diplomatic Adviser, and Mr. Mario Damen, Political Adviser.

The President held meetings with:

  • The Right Honorable Justin Trudeau, P.C., M.P., Prime Minister of Canada;
  • The Honourable Georges J. Furey, Q.C., Speaker of the Senate;
  • The Honourable Geoff Regan, P.C., M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons; and
  • The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, P.C., M.P., Minister of International Trade.

The visit was an opportunity to foster bilateral relations between the European Parliament and the Parliament of Canada. Many topics were discussed during the meetings, including the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, the Canada-European Union Strategic Partnership, refugees, peace and stability in the Middle-East and the upcoming referendum to decide whether Britain should leave or remain in the European Union.
