Canadian parliamentarians attended ParlAmericas Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

Parliamentarians assessed climate change with a gender lens

(Ottawa) May 30, 2018 – A Canadian all-party parliamentary delegation representing the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas attended the 10th Gathering of the ParlAmericas Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from May 22nd to 24th, 2018. The focus of the meeting was “Gender-Responsive Climate Action.”

The Honourable Bob Nault, P.C., M.P., Vice-President of ParlAmericas and Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, led the Canadian delegation and delivered opening remarks at the meeting. In addition to Mr. Nault, the Canadian delegation was comprised of the Honourable Anne Cools, Senator, the Honourable Mobina Jaffer, Senator and Vice-President of the ParlAmericas Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality, the Honourable Kellie Leitch, P.C., M.P., Mr. Randy Boissonnault, M.P. and Vice-President of ParlAmericas Open Parliamentary Network, and Ms. Sheila Malcolmson, M.P.

“I believe it was very important to emphasize in my remarks to delegates the role that parliamentarians need to play in prioritizing gendered-focused climate change actions both nationally and regionally,” stated Mr. Nault. “During our meetings, it was very clear that a gender lens must be applied to every aspect of climate change actions to bring about successful outcomes.”

During the meeting, delegates participated in sessions on such topics as the role of parliamentarians in ensuring appropriate investments in – and resource mobilization for – gender and climate change, best practices in designing gender-responsive climate adaptation measures, and the consequences of climate change for women’s health. Delegates also adopted a declaration on the meeting’s topics.

Mr. Nault concluded: “I was also pleased to have the opportunity to invite delegates from across the Americas and the Caribbean to attend ParlAmericas’ 15th Plenary Assembly in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia from September 9th to 12, 2018. I know that the Speakers of Canada’s Senate and House of Commons, along with members of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, are looking forward to hosting the meeting, which will focus on promoting inclusive societies for sustainable development.”

Founded 17 years ago in Ottawa, ParlAmericas is the only inter-parliamentary institution with its International Secretariat headquartered in Canada.

Since the beginning, the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas has worked closely with ParlAmericas International to further parliamentary diplomacy and political dialogue across the hemisphere.
