Canadian parliamentarians to attend ParlAmericas Open Parliament Network and 8th Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru.

Discussions to focus on open parliaments, corruption and women empowerment

OTTAWA — A Canadian all-party parliamentary delegation representing the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas will attend the 3rd Gathering of the Open Parliament Network at the 8th Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru from April 11th to 13th, 2018.

The Honourable Bob Nault, P.C., M.P., Vice-President of ParlAmericas and Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, will deliver opening and closing remarks at the Open Parliament meeting, which will be focused on “Open States for Democratic Governance Against Corruption.”

Mr. Nault will lead the Canadian delegation, comprising the Honourable Rosa Galvez, Senator, the Honourable Michael L. MacDonald, Senator, Mr. Marc Serré, M.P., and Mr. François Choquette, M.P.

The Open Parliament meeting will include a presentation by the President of the Congress of the Republic of Peru, Luis Galarreta, on consensus building. Delegates will also participate in working sessions on such topics as mechanisms to fight corruption in various countries of the hemisphere, the role of ethical standards and probity in public service in strengthening parliamentary integrity, and parliaments’ response to citizen needs through the use of technology to enhance collaboration with civil society.

Following the meeting of the Open Parliament Network, the Canadian delegation will participate in a high-level roundtable discussion on the topic of “Strengthening Democratic Governance through Women’s Empowerment and Leadership,” to be moderated by Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland.

The Canadian delegation will also attend the official inauguration of the 8th Summit of the Americas along with the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau.

“I’m looking forward to discussing the important issues that face our democratic institutions, and the fundamental importance of embracing parliamentary transparency within our respective countries,” stated Nault. “This meeting brings us all together to have open and frank discussions on matters that affect the everyday lives of those we represent and on how best to address the challenges we face. Certainly, meetings such as this enable us to make progress, build trust and – perhaps most importantly – build friendships.”

Founded 17 years ago in Ottawa, ParlAmericas is the only inter-parliamentary institution with its International Secretariat headquartered in Canada.

The Canadian Section of ParlAmericas works closely with ParlAmericas’ International Secretariat to advance parliamentary diplomacy and political dialogue across the hemisphere.
