CANADIAN SECTION OF THE CANADA–U.S. INTER-PARLIAMENTARY GROUP
SENDS CONDOLENCES ON THE DEATH OF NEW YORK REPRESENTATIVE LOUISE SLAUGHTER

“It was with great sadness that, on Friday, March 16, 2018, members of the Canadian Section of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group learned about the passing of New York Representative Louise Slaughter. She often mentioned the special relationship that our countries share, and – in a number of areas – she was a tireless supporter of Canadian causes. I am reminded, for example, of her June 2006 appearance before a Canadian Senate Committee to argue in favour of sensible implementation of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative between our countries, and of her 2011 resolution in the U.S. Congress – H.Res 286 – recognizing the assistance that Canada, especially the citizens of Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, provided to Americans immediately following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001,” said the Honourable Wayne Easter, P.C., M.P., House of Commons Co-Chair of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group.

Senator Michael L. MacDonald, Senate Co-Chair of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group, concluded: “Representative Slaughter was, in some ways, an institution within the Group. She frequently attended the Group’s annual meetings, and did her best to make time for us during our annual Congressional meetings in Washington. We could always count on her to provide practical advice and political insights. Certainly, our experience of Representative Slaughter aligns with those of others. We too found her to be a veritable force of nature, a visionary leader, and a trailblazer in a broad range of areas that were important to her and those she represented. It goes without saying that she will be missed by her family, constituents, and her Congressional and other friends. She will also be missed by Canadians who had the good fortune to know her.”

The Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group aims to find points of convergence in respective national policies, to initiate dialogue on points of divergence, to encourage the exchange of information, and to promote better understanding among legislators on shared issues of concern.
