CANADIAN PARLIAMENTARIANS ATTEND LEGISLATIVE SUMMIT WITH U.S. STATE LEGISLATORS

From 5–9 August 2017, Senator Michael L. MacDonald, Co-Chair of the Canadian Section of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group, led a delegation to the annual legislative summit of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in Boston, Massachusetts. The other members of the delegation were Senator Jim Munson, Mr. Brian Masse, M.P., Vice-Chair, Mr. Jamie Schmale, M.P. and Mr. Marc Serré, M.P.

“As a frequent attendee at the NCSL’s legislative summit, I can attest to the unparalleled opportunity that we have to speak with state legislators from throughout the United States, and with representatives of the many foreign countries that also send a delegation to this valuable forum,” said Senator MacDonald. “Each year, the topics that are discussed at the summit’s task force, plenary and committee sessions are relevant for both Canada and the United States as we continue to seek opportunities to work together on issues for our shared benefit.”

Mr. Masse concluded: “I know that my colleagues and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend NCSL’s 2017 legislative summit. We are always impressed by the wide array of public policy issues that are examined, and we return to Canada with valuable information that we can use in our legislative work.”

The National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan organization serving the legislators and legislative staff of the 50 U.S. states, as well as its commonwealths and territories. With its standing committees comprised of legislators and legislative staff, the NCSL provides research, technical assistance and a venue for the exchange of ideas on state issues.
