An Act to establish National Ovarian Cancer Month
Preamble
WHEREAS every year over 2,600 women in Canada are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and one in seventy Canadian women will get this type of cancer in her lifetime;
WHEREAS over 1,500 women die each year in Canada of this disease, because the symptoms are often vague and diagnosis is usually made in the later stages, when a cure is less likely;
WHEREAS, when ovarian cancer is detected early and treated, the survival rate is as high as 90 per cent;
WHEREAS it is necessary to support research into finding early detection tests for ovarian cancer and to raise awareness about the seriousness of this woman’s disease across North America;
AND WHEREAS it is necessary to ensure that the Government of Canada joins the Government of the United States of America in proclaiming the month of September as National Ovarian Cancer Month;
NOW, THEREFORE, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
SHORT TITLE
Short title
1. This Act may be cited as the National Ovarian Cancer Month Act.
NATIONAL OVARIAN CANCER MONTH
National Ovarian Cancer Month
2. Throughout Canada, in each and every year, the month of September shall be known as “National Ovarian Cancer Month”.
