Summary
This enactment amends the Official Language Act to clarify the scope of section 41 of that Act in the manner most apt to ensure the attainment of its object.

An Act to amend the Official Languages Act (fostering of English and French)
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1. Section 41 of the Official Languages Act is replaced by the following:
Government policy
41. In accordance with subsections 16(1) and (3) of the Constitution Act, 1982, the Government of Canada shall take the measures necessary to ensure the vitality and the development of the English and French linguistic minority communities in Canada and foster the full recognition and use of both English and French in Canadian society.

Explanatory Notes
Clause 1: Section 41 reads as follows:
41. The Government of Canada is committed to
(a) enhancing the vitality of the English and French linguistic minority communities in Canada and supporting and assisting their development; and
(b) fostering the full recognition and use of both English and French in Canadian society.
