An Act to amend the Canada Evidence Act

R.S., c. C-5

      Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

CANADA EVIDENCE ACT

1. The Canada Evidence Act is amended by adding the following after section 30:

Construing numeric dates in documents

30.1 (1) Where a date in a document that is expressed as three groups of numerals is in dispute in any legal proceeding, the date shall be construed as if the year is first, the month is second and the day is third unless a contrary intention is expressed in the document.

Definition of ``legal proceeding''

(2) In this section, ``legal proceeding'' means any civil or criminal proceeding or inquiry in which evidence is or may be given, and includes an arbitration.
