SUMMARY

The purpose of this enactment is to establish a process of consultation between governments, education professionals, industry, labour, parents, youth, voluntary organizations and other sectors that will facilitate the establishment of national education standards.

The standards are to include a standard age to which education shall continue, improvements in core subjects, student motivation, teacher development, better links with employers and more attention to employment-oriented training, student assessments, credit transfers and adult literacy programs.

The Minister of Industry has the responsibility of initiating the process of consultation, initially through a conference with provincial officials, and is to report to Parliament on progress.
