SUMMARY

This bill provides that, before certain companies can sell lists containing personal information obtained by them, they must send a notice to every one whose name appears on the lists.

The notice must contain

    (a) a detailed description of the personal information appearing on the list;

    (b) a request for the consent of each individual to having personal information appear on the list; and

    (c) a statement that the individual can request removal of the personal information from the list.

In addition, companies that have purchased a list and use it for business or charitable purposes must send a notice to every individual who is contacted.

The notice must contain

    (a) the source of the list;

    (b) a detailed description of the personal information appearing on the list; and

    (c) a statement that the individual may request the removal of any personal information from the list at any time.

This bill applies to companies that employ one or more people on or in connection with a federal work, undertaking or business as defined in section 2 of the Canada Labour Code.
