Canada-China Legislative Association conducts 24th bilateral meeting in Beijing and Shanghai

From 24 to 29 March 2024, five members of the Canada-China Legislative Association (CACN) travelled to Beijing and Shanghai, People's Republic of China (China) to attend the 24th bilateral meeting between the CACN and the National People's Congress of China.

The delegation, led by the Hon. Paul J. Massicotte, Senator and Co-Chair of the association, included Co-Chair MP Han Dong; the Hon. Victor Oh, Senator; MP Majid Jowhari; and MP Don Davies.

In addition to strengthening bilateral relations between Canada and China, the visit objectives included exploring ways to improve people-to-people ties, expand trade opportunities and deepen environmental cooperation. The delegation had open and frank conversations on a broad variety of issues, such as supporting Canadian businesses operating in China. The topic of human rights was also raised. Delegates advocated for China to issue visas to Canadian journalists and for increasing the number of flights between the two countries. The delegation was pleased to meet with the Canadian Ambassador to China, the Shanghai Consul-General and a number of Canadian entrepreneurs to hear their views on how to support Canada's economic and diplomatic interests.

A full report detailing the delegation’s activities will be tabled in both chambers of Parliament.
