Canadian Section of ParlAmericas calls for end to attacks on Ukraine

Last week marked one month since the Russian Federation expanded its unprovoked military invasion of Ukraine. Today, the executive committee of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas issued a statement concerning this most recent invasion.

“Members of ParlAmericas’ legislatures work actively to promote democracy, gender equality and sustainable development, all of which are being undermined by Russia’s ongoing, aggressive actions against Ukraine,” said Marc G. Serré, MP, Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas.

He continued: “Members of ParlAmericas believe in working together to strengthen democratic governance and promote citizens’ participation in legislative decision making. Ukraine’s democracy is currently under threat, and disinformation is being used as a tool to disseminate false justifications for Russia’s attack on Ukraine.”

“ParlAmericas members also prioritize gender equality,” he added. “To date, millions of women and children have fled Ukraine and become refugees, and others are attempting to leave the country. Crises and displacement put people – particularly women and girls, as well as those from minority and marginalized groups – at increased risk of sexual and physical violence, and abuse. The trauma and suffering experienced during the war’s first month can persist across generations, and the violence in Ukraine must stop.”

Mr. Serré concluded: “The crisis in Ukraine – and the world’s response to it – may threaten food security in many countries, leading to greater hunger and slower progress on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. There is also a risk that progress on climate goals may be undermined if countries expand fossil fuel production to replace Russian imports.”
