CANADIAN SECTION OF THE CANADA–U.S. INTERPARLIAMENTARY GROUP
SENDS CONDOLENCES ON THE DEATH OF MICHAEL WILSON, FORMER
FINANCE MINISTER AND CANADIAN AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED STATES

“It was with great sadness that, on Monday, February 10, 2019, members of the Canadian Section of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group learned about the passing of former finance minister and Canadian Ambassador to the United States, the Honourable Michael Wilson. Michael was an advocate for Canada as a Cabinet Minister, a Member of Parliament and as Canadian Ambassador to the United States. Having served in these roles, he had a unique perspective into the work of the Canada-U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Group, as he shared in our efforts to bring legislators from Canada and the United States together to foster understanding and collaboration between our two countries. We continue to hold the highest respect for Michael’s exceptional work and character.” said the Honourable Wayne Easter, P.C., M.P., House of Commons Co-Chair of the Canadian Section of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group.

Senator Michael L. MacDonald, Senate Co-Chair of the Canadian Section of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group, concluded: “Michael Wilson’s legacy in the public service carries on today, as his work on the North American Free Trade Agreement paved the way for the prosperous relationship our nations have shared, and will continue to share for years to come. His advocacy on behalf of mental health was a great help to many Canadians, and an inspiration to all of us. It goes without saying that he will be missed by his family, former colleagues and other friends. It is to them, and to those Canadians who had the good fortune to know him, that we extend our most heartfelt sympathies.”

The Canada–United States IPG aims to find points of convergence in respective national policies, to initiate dialogue on points of divergence, to encourage the exchange of information and to promote better understanding among legislators on shared issues of concern.
