ParlAmericas’ Canadian Section engages in high-level talks with Mexican officials

Canadian parliamentarians to meet with Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs

OTTAWA – February 11, 2019 — On February 11–13, 2019, the Honourable Bob Nault, P.C., M.P., President of ParlAmericas and Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, will lead an all-party delegation to Mexico City, Mexico for bilateral meetings. Mr. Nault will be accompanied by the Honourable Rosa Galvez, Senator, the Honourable Kellie Leitch, P.C., M.P., Mr. David Christopherson, M.P. and Mr. Marc Serré, M.P.

The visit to Mexico builds on a meeting held in Ottawa on October 22, 2018 between ParlAmericas’ Canadian Section and then incoming cabinet members of the newly elected government of Mexico.

During their mission to Mexico City, the Canadian delegation will meet with: Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Luz María de la Mora, Undersecretary of the Economy. In addition, the delegation has scheduled meetings with Adelfo Regino, head of the newly created National Institute for Indigenous Peoples, with the foreign affairs committees in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, and with business leaders, academics and representatives of civil society organizations.

“These meetings are extremely important and timely as it is the first delegation of Canadian parliamentarians to visit Mexico since that country inaugurated a new president,” said Mr. Nault. “Engaging with Mexican officials at this early stage will help us to establish a strong relationship with Mexican parliamentarians and with President López Obrador’s administration.”

As well, the delegation will participate in activities designed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Canada–Mexico relations, which are being organized by the Embassy of Canada. Mr. Nault will make opening remarks at an event at which the Canada–Mexico Handbook – a reference tool for helping to promote bilateral relations – will be launched.

Founded in 2001 in Ottawa, ParlAmericas is the only interparliamentary institution with its International Secretariat headquartered in Canada. The Canadian Section of ParlAmericas works closely with the Secretariat to advance parliamentary diplomacy and political dialogue throughout the Americas and the Caribbean.
