CANADIAN PARLIAMENTARIANS MEET WITH U.S. STATE LEGISLATORS

On 24 September 2018, members of the Canadian Section of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group (IPG) met with state legislators from five U.S. states: Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Montana and Wisconsin. The U.S. delegation was led by Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers, who is the 2018 Chair of the Council of State Governments (CSG).

“We were very pleased to be able to meet with U.S. state legislators, and to discuss trade, security and other important bilateral topics,” said the Honourable Wayne Easter, P.C., M.P., Co-Chair of the IPG’s Canadian Section. “Every interaction between legislators in our two countries provides an opportunity to discuss issues that are important to both nations, and to identify ways in which we can work together for our joint benefit and for enhanced prosperity.”

Senator Michael L. MacDonald, Co-Chair of the Canadian Section of the IPG, concluded: “The IPG’s Canadian Section has a long association with the CSG. Members of the Canadian Section regularly attend the organization’s national meeting, as well as the meetings of its southern, western, eastern and midwestern regions. We always welcome the conversations that we have and the knowledge that we gain about policy issues that are important to Canada and the United States.”

The CSG serves all three branches of state government and provides regional fora – the western, midwestern, southern and eastern regional conferences – through which ideas and insights are exchanged with a view to shaping public policy. Additional information on the CSG can be found at www.csg.org.

The views expressed in this news release are specific to the Canadian Section of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group. For this reason, they may not reflect the views of U.S. counterparts.

The Canada–United States IPG aims to find points of convergence in respective national policies, to initiate dialogue on points of divergence, to encourage the exchange of information and to promote better understanding among legislators on shared issues of concern.
