An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (genetically modified food)

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

Food and Drugs Act

1The Food and Drugs Act is amended by adding the following after section 5:

Genetically modified food

Start of inserted block

5.‍1No person shall sell any food that is genetically modified unless its label contains the information prescribed under paragraph 30(1)‍(b.‍2).

2Subsection 30(1) of the Act is amended by adding the following after paragraph (b):

  • Start of inserted block

    (b.‍1)defining the expression “genetically modified”;

  • (b.‍2)respecting the labelling of genetically modified food, to prevent the purchaser or the consumer of the food from being deceived or misled in respect of its composition;

    End of inserted block

Coming into force

Order in council

3This Act comes into force on a day to be fixed by order of the Governor in Council.
